The Indian Constitution has a specific preamble. It runs thus: We the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic, and to secure to all its citizens
  • Justice-Social, Economic and Political
  • Liberty-of thought, expression, faith, belief and worship
  • Equality-of status and opportunity; and to promote among them all
  • Fraternity-assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation.
From the above preable the main features of the Constitution are revealed. There are still so many in it. They are listed below:
  1. It is a written and a comprehensive document.
  2. It guarantees fundamental rights to all its citizens.
  3. It specifies certain fundamental duties of citizens.
  4. It provides Directive Principles of State Policy which helps for the guidance of legislature and executive of the nation.
  5. It establishes a parliamentary form of government.
  6. It establishes a federation with unitary features.
  7. It is rigid and at the same time flexible.
  8. It guarantees separation of powers and thus there is independence of judiciary.
  9. It provides for adult franchise.
  10. It provides for single citizenship.
